African Voices at UNGA80: Innovating for Sustainable, Self-Reliant Futures

African-Led Innovation: Shaping Sustainable Futures Without Aid

On September 24, a high-level side event titled "African-led Innovation: Shaping Sustainable Futures With or Without Aid" took place during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). This gathering was organized in collaboration with eHealth Africa, Population Services International (PSI), Population Council, and Reach Digital Health. The event aimed to elevate the voices of African-led organizations and emphasize the significance of local innovations in achieving sustainability, even when external support is limited.

The year 2025 has presented significant challenges for global development, particularly due to reductions in U.S. foreign aid, which have affected many nations' ability to maintain essential services such as healthcare, education, and nutrition. Despite these obstacles, Africa has showcased impressive self-reliance, with governments, stakeholders, and private sectors collaborating to drive innovations that prioritize long-term sustainability and inclusivity.

Chernor A. Bah, the Minister of Information and Civic Education for Sierra Leone and a global advocate for youth empowerment, highlighted the continent's innovative spirit during his opening remarks. He emphasized the unique opportunity for Africa to establish self-reliance, noting the continent's young population and vast potential. "We can build a society that is economically strong and socially just," he said.

The panelists at the event unanimously agreed that Africa possesses the necessary tools to create a sustainable and equitable future, even without foreign aid. However, they stressed that this vision requires inclusive systems designed with a community-centered approach.

Debbie Rogers, CEO of Reach Public Health, pointed out that public health systems should be scalable, focusing on solutions that address the needs of the majority. Michael Holscher, President of PSI, added that innovation thrives when it is co-designed with the communities it serves, incorporating their insights and ensuring long-term effectiveness.

The discussion also underscored the importance of including marginalized and vulnerable communities in sustainable development conversations. Women and girls, who form a significant part of Africa's economy, must be at the forefront of these discussions. According to the World Economic Forum, women and girls contribute significantly to the continent's self-employment and GDP, yet they face disproportionate challenges such as gender-based violence.

Dr. Kemi DaSilva-Ibru, founder of Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF), emphasized the need for inclusion in innovation design. She called for accessibility and a focus on the diverse needs of marginalized groups. "Innovation must be embedded in the design process, considering the ecosystem of all players involved," she stated.

Panelists also highlighted the importance of directing financial resources to the right stakeholders and maintaining consistent communication between communities, governments, and the private sector. Effective collaboration across public and private sectors, civil societies, and experts in technology, delivery, and policy is essential for driving progress in Africa.

Fara Ndiaye, Deputy Executive Director of Speak Up Africa, stressed the need for accountability in sustainable development. She emphasized the importance of financing the right stakeholders, amplifying the right voices, and providing scientists with platforms to share their findings. "Accountability must involve structured engagement between governments and private sector companies," she said.

The event concluded with a call to action for stakeholders to work together towards a shared agenda, ensuring that resources and success are defined by those most affected. By embracing African-led innovation, the continent can continue to build resilient systems and achieve sustainable futures.
