Starting next month, Eastar Jet will implement a comprehensive ban on the use of portable auxiliary batteries, commonly known as power banks, during flights. The airline announced this policy change on the 24th, stating that effective from October 1, all passengers on both domestic and international flights will be prohibited from using portable power banks to charge personal electronic devices while aboard. As part of the initiative, Eastar Jet plans to conduct a three-month trial period, with the goal of finalizing the regulation by the end of the year.

Under the new rules, passengers will still be allowed to carry portable power banks on board, either in their personal belongings or stored in the seat pocket in front of them. However, they will not be permitted to use these devices at any stage of the flight, including takeoff, landing, and cruising. To ensure compliance, the airline will repeatedly communicate this rule through airport counters, boarding gates, and onboard announcements. Additionally, cabin crew will actively monitor the cabin and ask passengers who are using power banks to stop immediately.

A representative from Eastar Jet explained that the decision was driven by growing concerns over lithium-ion battery-related incidents. “The number of fire incidents caused by lithium-ion batteries is increasing globally,” the source said. “In many overseas jurisdictions, there is a growing trend of banning the use of these batteries on aircraft.”

The airline emphasized that most in-flight battery fires occur during the charging process. In response, Eastar Jet has developed its own set of regulations to ensure safe operations. These measures reflect a broader industry awareness of the risks associated with portable power banks and highlight the need for stricter controls on their use during air travel.
