EU-funded project to power local green hydrogen workforce

The European Union (EU) has officially launched the “Ignite GH2” project in Namibia, an initiative to develop technical and vocational skills for the country’s growing green hydrogen sector.

Implemented by the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and the Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT), in partnership with private sector green hydrogen operators Zhero and Hyphen, the project will upskill approximately 700 unemployed graduates.

The project, which was signed at NIMT last week, is a key component of the EU’s Global Gateway initiative. The launch occurred during a high-level EU visit led by Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Sikela, and Barry Andrews, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development.

Forty trainers will also receive an advanced Level 6 certification, as part of a wider effort to build a workforce ready for Namibia’s green transition, and all beneficiaries of the training will be recorded on the Hyphen, Zhero, and Daures Green Hydrogen Village job seeker databases.

“The green hydrogen industry holds the power to unlock tens of thousands of quality jobs for Namibians. Through Global Gateway, we are turning this promise into tangible progress and real opportunities for people across the country,” Sikela said.

The EU last week pledged to assist Namibia with its green transition. The funding package for Namibia is allocated to key projects like HyIron and Cleanergy, as well as strategic investments in transportation networks, power grids, port infrastructure, and vocational training.
