A Vision for AI in Nigerian Healthcare

The Group Managing Director of ipNX Nigeria, Ejovi Aror, has advocated for a focused and coordinated national strategy to promote the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the country’s healthcare sector. His call came during the inaugural Nigeria AI Forum for Medical Directors Workshop, which took place at the Obafemi Awolowo University ICT-Driven Knowledge Park in Ile-Ife.

The event, themed “Transforming Healthcare: AI-Driven Solutions for Nigeria’s Medical Future,” brought together medical directors, researchers, and clinicians from tertiary health institutions across Nigeria and other parts of Africa. This gathering highlighted the growing interest in leveraging AI to address critical challenges in the healthcare system.

Aror emphasized that a clear framework is essential to establish standards for data governance, ethics, and infrastructure development. He pointed out that integrating AI into healthcare could significantly improve patient outcomes, enhance clinical efficiency, and transform service delivery on a national scale.

“This initiative goes beyond the government or any single company; it requires a coalition involving government, academia, hospitals, telecommunications companies, regulators, and innovators,” he said in a statement.

Aror also mentioned that ipNX had already supported the creation of an AI Studio at OAU, showcasing the company’s commitment to fostering research and innovation beyond just building networks. The workshop further featured the induction of the Nigerian Healthcare AI Implementation Special Aid Group, signaling a collaborative approach to implementing AI solutions in the healthcare sector.

A key focus of the discussion was the need for a reliable backbone infrastructure to sustain digital healthcare. Aror highlighted the resilience of the ICT sector as proof that Nigeria can overcome challenges in this area. He drew a parallel with the early days of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), where initial infrastructure was lacking but innovative solutions were developed to address the challenges.

“I am confident we can do the same for AI in medical practice,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria already has solid interconnections between banks, NIBSS, and the Central Bank of Nigeria, which have helped create a reliable financial backbone. Replicating this model in healthcare, according to Aror, would unlock the potential of AI. He stressed that the country also has the talent to build and maintain such systems.

Key Takeaways from the Workshop

  • Collaboration is Essential: The success of AI in healthcare depends on a multi-stakeholder approach involving government, academia, hospitals, telcos, regulators, and innovators.
  • Infrastructure Development: Reliable infrastructure is crucial for sustaining digital healthcare initiatives. Lessons from the financial sector can be applied to the healthcare domain.
  • Ethics and Governance: Establishing clear frameworks for data governance and ethical AI use is vital to ensure responsible implementation.
  • Local Talent: Nigeria possesses the human capital needed to develop and maintain advanced AI systems. Investing in local expertise will be key to long-term success.
  • Innovation Ecosystems: Initiatives like the AI Studio at OAU demonstrate the importance of creating spaces for research and innovation that go beyond traditional network-building.

As Nigeria continues to explore the potential of AI in healthcare, the insights and discussions from the workshop provide a strong foundation for future action. By focusing on collaboration, infrastructure, and ethical considerations, the country can position itself as a leader in AI-driven healthcare solutions across Africa.
