Google's Remarkable AI Turnaround

Google has undergone a significant transformation in the field of artificial intelligence, turning around its fortunes after initial missteps and public criticism. Once seen as lagging behind in the AI race, the company has now become a major player in consumer-facing AI solutions.

In March 2023, Google launched Bard, its version of ChatGPT, four months after the original chatbot made waves globally. However, during its launch event, Bard made a notable error when answering a question about the James Webb telescope, which led to widespread ridicule. This incident prompted several analysts to downgrade their recommendations for Alphabet, the parent company of Google, due to concerns that ChatGPT could threaten Google’s long-standing dominance in the search engine market.

A year later, in May 2024, Google introduced AI Overviews, an AI feature integrated into Google Search. Despite its ambitious goals, this feature faced backlash online after it recommended a glue pizza recipe and suggested eating a rock daily in response to queries. These missteps highlighted the challenges Google faced in its AI development despite years of investment in the technology.

Google had been investing in AI for over a decade, acquiring DeepMind in 2014 and producing high-level research publications that influenced the rise of ChatGPT. However, much of Google’s AI development focused on powering its platforms rather than delivering direct services to consumers, according to Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight. Ted Mortonson, an analyst at Baird, noted that Google leadership was caught off guard and had grown too complacent about their AI advantage.

The Turning Point

Amid these challenges, Google began to make changes. Sergey Brin, one of the company’s co-founders, was seen back at the Googleplex, signaling a shift in strategy. The company underwent a drastic internal reorganization, consolidating AI developers under a single Google DeepMind banner with Nobel Prize winner Demis Hassabis leading the charge.

CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the need for time to bring these teams together, stating on the "Lex Fridman Podcast" that he could see the internal trajectory of the company. Google also needed time to deploy its new in-house AI chips, the TPUs (Tensor Processing Units), which are essential to the company’s ambitions.

Despite the "glue pizza" missteps, or what is known as hallucinations in AI terminology, Overviews marked the first step in Google’s turnaround. Following this, the company launched NotebookLM, a digital document tool that can synthesize uploaded content into easy-to-understand writing or even a chatty podcast.

At Google’s developer conference in May 2025, the company unveiled Veo 3, a video generation tool that gained significant attention for its precision and consistency. Additionally, AI Mode was introduced, completing the transformation of the search engine into a ChatGPT-style chatbot.

Expanding AI Capabilities

In August, Google released a new version of the Pixel smartphone, featuring AI capabilities such as 100x zoom and real-time translation. Mid-September saw the launch of video generation on YouTube, further expanding Google’s AI offerings.

Avi Greengart of Techsponential emphasized that today’s tools from Google can be used in the real world, unlike previous developer conference demos. Ben Wood noted that Google is in a strong position in AI equipment with the Pixel.

Google solidified its position with an image editing program integrated into Gemini, informally called Nano Banana, which became so popular that Gemini topped ChatGPT in iPhone downloads for the first time earlier this month.

The outlook for Google brightened further when it avoided having to sell its Chrome browser, a demand from the government in its search monopoly trial that was rejected by a federal judge in early September. This decision allowed Google to maintain control over its key products.

Apple is reportedly considering using Gemini for its overhaul of the AI voice assistant Siri, according to Bloomberg. A partnership with Apple would provide Google with a new revenue stream, although monetizing its AI remains a challenge, said Greengart.

Ben Wood noted that Google is playing the long game, understanding that it needs to offer free services to engage consumers with Gemini. However, in the longer term, Google hopes to turn this engagement into a substantial revenue stream.
