Major Overhaul of KakaoTalk: A New Era for the Messaging App

After 15 years in the market, KakaoTalk is undergoing a significant transformation. The app, which has long been a staple in South Korea, has announced a major revamp called the “Big Bang Project.” This update was revealed during the “if Kakao 25” developer conference held on the 23rd at Kakao’s AI Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. According to the company, this change represents an unprecedented shift in KakaoTalk’s history.

The updated version of the app began rolling out on the afternoon of the 23rd. A Kakao representative explained that updates are being rolled out sequentially to avoid system issues caused by simultaneous updates from all 50 million users. If users have auto-updates enabled, the update will occur automatically when they open the app. Otherwise, they must manually update via the app store or play store.

Key Features of the Revamp

One of the most notable changes is the transformation of the first tab, known as the “Friends” tab. Previously, it functioned like a traditional phonebook, listing contacts in alphabetical order. Now, it has evolved into a social media feed similar to Instagram. Instead of just showing contact names, the tab will display posts shared by users. Profiles will now include profile photos, status messages, and posts, with options to set visibility ranges for shared content.

The second tab, the “Chatting” tab, is also receiving a major overhaul. Building on the existing 24-hour message deletion feature, a new “message edit” function will be added. Users can now categorize chat rooms into folders labeled “Family,” “Friends,” or “Work.” An “Unread” folder will aggregate unread messages. Additionally, the “reply” feature, which allowed users to respond to specific messages, will be replaced by a “comment” function. This new feature organizes comments under specific messages in group chats, grouping discussions by topic.

Voice Call Enhancements and AI Integration

The “Voice Talk” feature, which enables voice calls, will also see updates. A single button press will allow users to record calls, with AI instantly transcribing or summarizing the conversation.

Artificial intelligence is at the core of this revamp. The AI service “KANANA” will power a new search function, replacing the existing “#” search feature. KANANA will also summarize unread messages in chats. Starting next month, OpenAI’s ChatGPT—powered by the latest GPT-5 model—will be integrated into the top of the Chatting tab. Users will access ChatGPT’s existing features, including search and image generation. Additionally, “Kakao Agent,” an AI-driven platform integrating KakaoMap, Melon, and other Kakao services, will launch next month.

Strategic Goals and User Reactions

Kakao’s overhaul aims to increase user engagement and improve profitability. The average monthly time spent on KakaoTalk dropped from 822 minutes in May 2021 to 686 minutes in January. Teens and those in their 20s increasingly prefer platforms like Instagram and Telegram. The social media features appear designed to attract this demographic.

User reactions to the update have been mixed. Some users expressed confusion about unexpected posts appearing in their feed, while others appreciated the addition of the message-editing feature, calling it a relief that it was finally added. A Kakao representative noted, “We will continue refining features based on user feedback.”

Conclusion

With these major changes, KakaoTalk is positioning itself as a more versatile and engaging platform. By integrating social media features and advanced AI capabilities, the app is aiming to stay relevant in a competitive digital landscape. As the rollout continues, it will be interesting to see how users adapt to the new features and whether the changes ultimately lead to increased engagement and satisfaction.
