The New KakaoTalk: A Controversial Overhaul Sparks Outrage

The recent redesign of KakaoTalk, a messaging app used by millions in South Korea, has triggered widespread backlash from users. With 49 million active users, the platform is now facing criticism for its new features that have significantly altered the user experience. The update was rolled out gradually starting from the afternoon of the 23rd, but as more users adopted the changes, dissatisfaction grew.

One of the most contentious changes is the transformation of the “Friends” tab into an Instagram-like feed. This feature now fills the first screen with posts from colleagues, business contacts, and other professional connections. For many users, this shift has been disorienting. Some have reported seeing unfamiliar faces, such as those of former coworkers or people they barely remember. The design change has led to confusion and frustration, with users questioning why they are being exposed to content from people they don’t interact with regularly.

For instance, Mr. A, a man in his 30s, was startled when he opened KakaoTalk on the morning of the 25th. Instead of his usual friend list, he saw a face he didn’t recognize. After checking his phonebook, he realized the number was saved under a name from years ago. The profile picture disappeared three hours later, leaving him unsettled. Another user, Mr. Kang, was shocked to see a photo of seaweed soup displayed prominently after the update.

Users have also expressed concerns about the difficulty of managing their online presence. Uploading “on vacation” status images, which were once a convenient feature, has become more challenging. Many worry that their vacation photos might inadvertently appear on someone else’s screen. To mitigate unwanted posts, users can now hide specific friends, but this workaround has not alleviated the overall discontent.

Critics argue that the redesign undermines the core purpose of a messaging app. One user remarked, “Do they think KakaoTalk friends are real friends? Those who want to use Instagram should use Instagram, not KakaoTalk.” Others have called for the return of the old phonebook-style interface, emphasizing that a messaging app should focus on messaging rather than social media features.

Parents Concerned About Short-Form Video Integration

In addition to the Friends tab overhaul, the introduction of short-form videos has raised alarms among parents. The “Open Chat” tab has been renamed “Now,” and tapping it immediately displays short-form content. This move is seen as an attempt to compete with platforms like TikTok and YouTube, which rely heavily on short-form videos to engage users.

Parents are particularly worried about the impact of these videos on their children. One parent shared, “My child came home and said KakaoTalk looked weird, and I was shocked to see short-form videos. We’ve restricted short-form content to protect their mental health, but now we might have to delete KakaoTalk from their phone.” Another parent noted that many schools use KakaoTalk’s open chat rooms for class communication, making it difficult to disable the short-form video feature.

Experts have long warned about the potential negative effects of short-form content on adolescents, including emotional instability, depression, and reduced attention spans. A recent French National Assembly investigation committee concluded that TikTok is one of the worst social media platforms threatening teenagers, with all members agreeing on its harmful effects.

Kakao has responded to these concerns by explaining that while there is no direct in-app toggle to disable short-form videos, legal guardians can restrict access through customer service. This involves verifying both their and their child’s phones on Kakao’s website, submitting an email, inquiry details, and a family relationship certificate. The restriction lasts for one year and must be renewed annually. However, many parents find this process cumbersome and inadequate.

As the controversy surrounding KakaoTalk continues, the pressure on the company to address user concerns grows. The redesign has sparked a broader conversation about the balance between innovation and user experience, with many calling for a return to the app’s original functionality.
