Mastercard and Smile ID Unite to Expand Digital Identity in Africa

Strengthening Digital Trust in Africa
Mastercard has significantly enhanced its strategic collaboration with Smile ID, a prominent African identity verification company, to accelerate the implementation of secure digital identity solutions throughout the continent. This partnership is designed to empower financial institutions, fintech startups, mobile money operators, and enterprises by enabling them to onboard customers quickly and safely, while also minimizing the risk of identity fraud and expanding access to financial services.
The alliance combines Mastercard’s global identity technology and insights with Smile ID’s advanced data verification and fraud detection capabilities. Together, they are delivering instant, secure onboarding across various African markets, improving fraud prevention through features like synthetic identity detection, ensuring compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations, and offering scalable solutions for cross-border commerce.
As Africa's digital economy is expected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2030, the need for reliable identity solutions has become increasingly critical. The growing adoption of smartphones further highlights the importance of secure and accessible identity verification across digital platforms.
Smile ID's integrations with local governments and trusted data sources allow for near real-time onboarding and a pan-African reach. This positions the partnership uniquely to address fragmented identity systems and promote digital inclusion.
As part of the agreement, Mastercard has made a minority investment in Smile ID, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and inclusion in Africa. This initiative builds upon Mastercard's long-standing history of supporting African governments, businesses, and communities over the past five decades.
“This partnership with Smile ID marks a significant milestone in advancing digital trust and inclusion across Africa,” said Selin Bahadirli, Executive Vice President, Services, Mastercard EEMEA. “Smile ID’s innovative platform aligns perfectly with Mastercard’s mission to foster secure and inclusive digital ecosystems.”
Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID, emphasized the growing threat of synthetic identity fraud, which is costing African banks and lenders hundreds of millions annually. “By collaborating with Mastercard, we can securely onboard the next 300 million African users in seconds,” he added.
This partnership represents a major step forward in addressing the challenges of identity verification in Africa. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and local expertise, Mastercard and Smile ID are paving the way for a more secure, inclusive, and connected digital future for the continent.
