Meta's AI First to Directly Recommend Matches

An era has begun where artificial intelligence (AI) sets up ideal blind dates. On the 22nd, local time, Meta announced that it has added an AI-based "Dating Assistant" feature to its social media (SNS) Facebook Dating service.

This feature takes the form of an AI chatbot, which receives requests based on users’ uploaded profile information and connects them with suitable matches. For example, if a user asks the Dating Assistant chatbot, “Find me a woman who lives in New York and works in the tech industry,” it will recommend a match. The AI also includes a function that advises users on how to make their profiles more appealing. Meta additionally unveiled a feature called "Meet Cute," which surprises users weekly with candidates they might like, based on an algorithm. Meta did not disclose the algorithm behind these recommendations. These features will be rolled out sequentially in the U.S. and Canada.

This marks the first time AI has directly recommended and connected people based on users’ desired conditions. Previously, dating app companies had only introduced AI features to enhance profile appeal, suggest date locations or courses, and recommend appropriate conversation topics.

Meta’s decision to integrate AI into its dating service stems from the decline of dating apps that thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic. People began preferring offline matchmaking over online arrangements, and many expressed fatigue with dating apps. Bumble, which has over 50 million users worldwide, laid off 240 employees in May—30% of its total workforce. Match Group, the U.S. operator of Tinder, Hinge, and other dating apps, also saw around 300 employees, or 13% of its workforce, leave.

As a late entrant to the market, Facebook Dating aims to inject fresh energy into the stagnant industry through AI and leap to the forefront. Neha Kumar, Facebook Dating project manager, stated, “People are tired of swiping through hundreds of profiles (as in Tinder’s format) to find matches and dates.”
