Morocco Launches Digital Hub to Drive Sustainable Development in Africa and the Arab Region

Morocco has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to digital transformation by officially launching the “Morocco Digital for Sustainable Development Hub” (D4SD) in New York. This initiative, launched on Friday, aims to accelerate digital progress across Africa and the Arab region. The event took place during the 80th UN General Assembly, highlighting the global importance of this new platform.

The D4SD Hub was unveiled by the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The ceremony was attended by key figures including the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, the Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administration Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, and the Kingdom’s ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, Omar Hilale.

This strategic move positions Morocco as a key player in driving inclusive and sustainable digital transformation. The hub serves as a catalyst for innovation and development, focusing on the needs of African and Arab countries. It reflects Morocco’s dedication to using technology as a tool for equity, innovation, and opportunity.

A Vision for Inclusive Digital Growth

During the ceremony, Akhannouch emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future. He stated that Morocco is determined to play an active role in leveraging AI for inclusive and sustainable human development. His remarks were echoed by Seghrouchni, who highlighted the initiative's goal of making technology a driver of equity and opportunity.

Seghrouchni noted that the D4SD Hub translates Morocco’s vision of a digital future into reality. She stressed the importance of collective expertise and firm commitment from partners in achieving this goal. The hub is designed to address the challenges faced by Arab and African countries, such as fragmented systems, talent shortages, high costs, and inconsistent public policies.

Focusing on Key Sectors and Empowering Communities

The D4SD Hub will concentrate on AI applications in critical areas such as health, education, climate resilience, and governance. Additionally, it aims to empower women and youth as digital leaders. By addressing these sectors, the hub seeks to create solutions that are both inclusive and human-centered.

UNDP Acting Administrator Haoliang Xu highlighted the significance of the D4SD Hub in the context of the UNDP’s new Strategic Plan 2026-2029. He noted that through this partnership, the hub will offer a unique space for Arab and African countries to co-design and deploy digital solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Building Collaborative Networks

During the event, participants also discussed the creation of an Alliance for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Arab States and Africa. This multi-stakeholder platform aims to harmonize standards, develop skills, and promote the responsible use of AI for sustainable development. It complements the work of the D4SD Hub and reinforces the importance of collaboration in the digital landscape.

Morocco’s initiative underscores its leadership in South-South cooperation for digital transformation. The hub aligns with several global strategies, including the United Nations Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, the UNDP’s Global Digital Strategy, and the digital agendas of the African Union and the Arab League.

By launching the D4SD Hub, Morocco is not only advancing its own digital goals but also contributing to a broader vision of sustainable development. This initiative represents a commitment to creating a more connected, equitable, and innovative future for all.
