NASRDA Links Students to the Space Station

A Historic Space Connection for Nigerian Students

Nigeria made history by connecting its students with the International Space Station (ISS), where they engaged in a live interactive session with NASA astronaut Zena Cardman. This groundbreaking event, the first of its kind in the country, took place at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) headquarters in Abuja. It brought together students from various schools across the Federal Capital Territory, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s space exploration journey.

A Collaborative Effort

The session was attended by key figures including the Director-General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, along with the agency’s top management team, school administrators, students, and stakeholders in science and technology education. Dr. Felix Ale, the Director of Media and Corporate Communications at NASRDA, shared details about the event in a statement released on Tuesday.

In his welcome address, Dr. Adepoju highlighted the importance of this initiative as a record-breaking step forward for Africa’s space exploration. He emphasized that the program was designed to inspire and cultivate the interest of the younger generation in space science and technology. He also referred to the students as the hope of the nation, encouraging them to appreciate the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, whose vision has accelerated Nigeria’s scientific and technological progress.

Recognizing Key Contributors

Programme Coordinator Mrs. Joy Olayiwola of NASRDA, along with the team at GeoApps Plus Limited, were commended by Dr. Adepoju for their role in making the event a success. He described their efforts as a “giant stride” in advancing the Nigerian Space Programme.

During the event, Mr. Tope Owolabi, from the Department of Physical and Life Sciences at NASRDA, delivered a presentation that showcased the global significance and practical applications of space science. Topics covered included earth observation, satellite technology, and medical innovations, offering students a broader understanding of how space research impacts everyday life.

Engaging with an Astronaut

The highlight of the event was a live question-and-answer session moderated by Mr. Stefan Dombrowski from Belgium and Mr. John Sygo from South Africa. During this session, NASA astronaut Zena Cardman interacted directly with the students, answering their questions with insightful and engaging responses. The interactive nature of the session was widely praised as being both inspiring and educational, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.

Future Prospects

Mr. Emmanuel Onwuabuariri, Managing Director of GeoApps Plus Limited, expressed admiration for Dr. Adepoju’s visionary leadership in transforming NASRDA. He assured that future editions of the program would be even more impactful and expansive, building on the success of this inaugural event.

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of attendance to participating schools by Dr. Adepoju. He reiterated his call for students to embrace a culture of continuous learning and to use their potential to contribute to national development.

This historic event not only opened new doors for Nigerian students but also demonstrated the country's growing commitment to science, technology, and space exploration. It is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and the unwavering belief in the potential of the younger generation.
