Shaza Khawaja: IT to be Key in New Pak-Saudi Pact, 5G Coming Soon

Pakistan's Digital Transformation and International Collaboration

Federal Minister for Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, recently emphasized the pivotal role of IT in the recent Pak-Saudi agreement. She highlighted that the nation is on the verge of experiencing improved internet reliability and the imminent introduction of 5G technology within a few months. The initial rollout of 5G will target seven cities across the country, marking a significant step towards digital advancement.

During her address at the launching ceremony of the 26th ITCN Asia expo and subsequent interactions with media personnel at the Expo Centre, Khawaja outlined several key developments. She noted that the macro-economic landscape has shown increased stability and is moving toward sustainability. Karachi, as the economic hub, continues to bear the weight of the country’s development efforts.

Khawaja reflected on the challenges faced when her government took office, stating that Pakistan was once perceived as on the brink of default. However, she pointed out that the situation has significantly improved, with inflation levels decreasing and the economy showing signs of long-term sustainability. This progress has garnered international recognition, particularly through initiatives like Marqa e Haq, which have contributed to Pakistan’s global reputation.

She also mentioned that the country’s technological ranking is steadily improving. This growth is attributed to strong national support and the leadership of the Prime Minister. Khawaja emphasized the importance of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which aims to enhance the ease of doing business and attract foreign investment.

National Digitalization and AI Initiatives

Under the Digital Pakistan initiative, the country has started its journey toward national digitalization. Khawaja expressed confidence that the target of IT exports would be achieved, supported by the Prime Minister’s focus on a cashless digital economy. Additionally, the Federal Cabinet has approved an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, with implementation efforts already underway.

The minister highlighted the significance of digital training for the youth, stating that between 0.5 million and 1 million young people will complete training in AI and cybersecurity by the end of the year. She encouraged the youth to use their time effectively, noting that the digital era demands proactive engagement and education without excuses.

Khawaja stressed that those who understand and utilize technology effectively will occupy prominent positions in the future. She urged the younger generation to embrace the digital world, which has transformed perceptions and created new opportunities. “We have to think big and work together,” she said, emphasizing the need for collective effort.

Addressing Technical Challenges

When asked about the poor mobile services and inadequate data connectivity in certain regions, Khawaja acknowledged it as a technical issue. She explained that two submarine cables near Jeddah in the Red Sea had been damaged, affecting network performance. However, she assured that her ministry is taking steps to increase the number of submarine cables and improve internet reliability nationwide.

In addition to this, efforts are being made to expand fiberization, which will further enhance connectivity. When questioned about cybersecurity, Khawaja confirmed that Pakistan successfully prevented hacking attempts by India during a recent conflict, ensuring that no websites were compromised.

These developments underscore Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth, security, and international collaboration. With a clear vision and strategic initiatives, the country is positioning itself as a leader in the digital landscape.
