Spotify Introduces New Policies to Protect Artists from AI Misuse

Spotify, a leading global streaming service, has implemented new measures aimed at protecting artists, songwriters, and producers from the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry. These policies were announced in a statement, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges that AI tools present for creative professionals.

While some musicians are exploring AI to enhance their musical output, others are concerned about being impersonated or overshadowed by low-quality, AI-generated tracks. The company emphasized that unauthorized use of AI to clone an artist’s voice exploits their identity and undermines their artistic integrity. It also noted that while some artists may choose to license their voices for AI projects, it is crucial to ensure that such decisions remain entirely up to the artists themselves.

To address these concerns, Spotify has introduced a clear impersonation policy. This policy ensures that any AI-generated songs mimicking the voices of popular stars must have the original artist's explicit approval. The platform is also testing new strategies with music distributors to prevent scammers from uploading tracks under other people’s profiles.

In addition, Spotify is enhancing its “content mismatch” system, which helps artists report potential issues before a track is officially released. This proactive approach aims to identify and address problems early on.

Combating AI-Generated Music Spam

Beyond voice cloning, Spotify is tackling the surge of low-quality AI-generated music that floods the platform. The company highlighted that total music payouts on Spotify have increased significantly over the years, growing from $1 billion in 2014 to $10 billion in 2024. However, this growth has attracted bad actors who exploit the system.

To counter this, Spotify plans to launch a new spam-filtering system this fall. This system will be designed to detect and block tracks created to manipulate the platform using techniques such as duplicates, artificially short tracks, or SEO tricks. The rollout will be gradual to avoid unfairly penalizing genuine creators.

Increasing Transparency Through AI Disclosures

In another significant move, Spotify will begin displaying disclosures in music credits to inform listeners about the use of AI in a track. Working with industry partners under the DDEX standard, these disclosures will reveal whether AI was used for vocals, instrumentation, or post-production.

The company acknowledges that the use of AI tools is becoming more nuanced rather than a simple binary choice. It emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to AI transparency across the industry.

Ensuring Trust and Innovation

These initiatives are part of Spotify’s broader effort to maintain trust in music streaming while allowing artists the freedom to experiment with new tools. The company reiterated its commitment to investing in tools that protect artist identity, improve the platform, and provide greater transparency for listeners.

Spotify also shared that in the past year alone, it had removed over 75 million spam tracks, underscoring the scale of the challenge faced by the industry. The rise of AI-generated music has sparked debate among artists, with some embracing the technology while others view it as a threat.

As the music industry continues to evolve, Spotify’s new policies represent a critical step toward safeguarding creativity and ensuring that AI serves as a tool for innovation rather than a source of harm.
